"Disappointing - felt ripped off"

Bet El Kerem was a disappointment to my family in our 4 night stay there. The rooms are fairly basic and were not cleaned during our stay (and with all that sand they need to be swept everyday!). We had to search for towels to use. The bathrooms were problematic with difficulties with showers and water. The food was delicious but we were shocked to discover at the end of our visit that they were charged in Euros and children were full price! We had asked how much the meals cost and never received an answer so it was a shock to get the bill on the last night and left us short of cash. The tours we arranged prior to our arrival were on the whole very good and we were pleased with the guides and trips. The owners were not there at the time we stayed and I wonder if it would be different if they were there - I found it strange they were away as this was peak season and the guest house was full. The staff did not impress us and we found the pressure for 'tips' quite off-putting. I don't think this is good value for money overall. The roof terrace is lovely but I'm sure there are other terraces in town that would be worth checking out (although overall standards in Egypt are poor).

The food prepared by the cook on the premises is excellent. But otherwise the guest house is poorly managed with the rooms being noisy and the shared bathrooms in need of renovation. The staff are friendly and helpful, but we weren't told that they would not accept credit cards for payment until it was almost too late to get cash (from across the Nile in a boat!)
